DIGITALISATION IN CAMEROONIAN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Secondary school studies in any country could be considered the heart of education. One of the reasons for this could be the fact that it is the where the foundations of science and learning is laid. It’s true we learn how to do basic math and read in primary or elementary school (depending on the country you are reading from). The details of the educational structure in Cameroon is in one of our blogs that you might choose to read before continuing or read after this:

Education in Cameroon

With the current development in the world, permit me to say that literacy is gradually going beyond the concept of knowing how to read and write. Literacy is gradually being recognised as the ability to use basic digital tools. What exactly are these digital tools? A teacher who wrote on the theme of the Academic year issued by the Ministry of Secondary Education (MINESEC) said and we’ll quote;

…ensuring that each student has access to digital devices such as laptops, tablets or smartphones is essential…

Mr Ncho Meshack, philosophy teacher in Douala Cameroon

Digitalisation is not a new concept to the teachers by the way. A glimpse of this was observed and discussed as a possible remedy of the COVID 19 ‘aftermath’. The ministry of secondary education created an online learning platform. This platform was for distance learning and not digital learning. Nonetheless, during the previous academic year (2022 – 2023), the ministry fully implemented digital learning and by the beginning of this solar year, 2023, the ministry enforced and made it obligatory to all teachers, subject departments and schools. So many measures were put in place to facilitate the assimilation of the concept. (This is a whole topic on its own and will be discussed later, but you can share your concepts with us via our FACEBOOK GROUP).

The ministry’s online platform can be accessed directly by clicking here.

Remember the teacher we talked about just above (Mr NCHO MESHACK, philosophy teacher), his write-up was directed to his school more precisely but we think it will be of great value to everyone. With his permission we will post his write-up as a blog on its own but before then, what I got out of his message is that;

Seminars, workshops and orientation are crucial for a better comprehension, implementation and appreciation of digitalisation by parents, school societies and students respectively

To that effect, teachers will have to learn how to dispense lessons prepared by themselves or others using various media. To do this appropriately, you as a teacher need a laptop. We can help you get good laptops for as low as 70,000 FCFA. Just click on the link below.
